By default wiki.gg wikis are only editable by logged-in users. If you want anonymous editors to be able to edit, please contact staff. This page describes protecting pages to admin-only editing.

Protection policy

Wikis on wiki.gg are intended to be collaborative community resources. Therefore, we only permit protecting pages in a few circumstances, and generally you should not protect most of the content on your wiki.

Do not protect

  • Never protect your entire wiki or most of it.
  • Please don't protect any pages in the MediaWiki namespace, as these are already admin-protected (to the "interface administrator" group) and adding additional protection settings may interfere with automated scripts.
  • Don't protect templates just because you think someone might make a mistake editing them; templates are generally pretty hard to find, and a motivated editor is much more likely to be fixing a mistake that already existed. Also, even if someone messes up a template edit, you can still talk to them and likely gain a contributor to your wiki who can learn your template code-base and help out in the future.

Allowed to protect permanently

You may protect the following pages permanently:

  • The main page can and should be protected (but we don't recommend using cascading protection).
  • Important skin files such as a logo, favicon, background images, or any other files used in CSS can and should be upload-protected.
  • Pages that are repeatedly edited mistakenly over a period of months can be protected permanently.
    • Example: A help page that corrects a common misconception, but many people believe the wrong thing and try to "correct" it and end up writing something wrong. But, in this case, please try to clarify the information before resorting to protection.
  • Simple templates that are transcluded 1000+ times and are unlikely ever to be edited; example: {{(!}} could be protected on a very large wiki that uses this template frequently.

Allowed to protect temporarily

  • Pages that are relevant to ongoing community controversy and expect a high volume of edits, which may be inaccurate or in bad faith, can be protected.
    • Example: Some drama is happening between streamers, and the community is now talking about how a certain character in the game is super overpowered; you might temporarily protect that character's page.
  • Pages that have been vandalized recently (again, you should set an expiration date).

Other cases

This page is not exhaustive; if in doubt please contact wiki.gg staff for clarification on individual issues. However, the majority of pages on your wiki should not be protected.
