Support wiki
This is the wiki.gg support wiki! It's a different site from your content wiki!
Meta pages
Meta pages are pages that serve as central points for the wiki.
Main page
The main page serves as the front page of the wiki and is often the page that readers are most likely to land on. Due to its importance, it is only editable by admins by default, and we do not recommend changing the protection.
If you want to design a main page, you have a few options. The first option is to use the IMP framework from the default loadout wiki (if your wiki was created before October 2024, please ask for help installing this in the wiki.gg Discord server). However, if you want to create something from scratch, go for it. Just make sure the page displays correctly on mobile.
There are no clear guidelines for how the main page should look, but here are a few ideas for what to add:
- Description of the wiki
- It can be accompanied with stats, such as number of content pages (
{{NUMBEROFARTICLES}}
), number of files, such as images ({{NUMBEROFFILES}}
), or number of editors who made an edit in the last 30 days ({{NUMBEROFACTIVEUSERS}}
). If you want to use a different stat, check Magic words.
- It can be accompanied with stats, such as number of content pages (
- Short description of the topic
- Links to basic concepts within the topic (e.g., game mechanics)
- Featured pages
- Latest version
- Wiki Discord widget
- Wiki social media links
- Official links
- How to help section (can also be implemented as a separate page that you link to from the description of the wiki and/or sidebar)
Policy page
Project:Policy outlines basic policies and rules for how to contribute. It is very helpful for new editors, who may not be familiar with the wiki.
Please keep in mind that:
- All wiki policies have to follow wiki.gg's Terms of Service.
- All policies should be well explained.
- Instead of saying "Don't vandalize the wiki", specify what you mean by the word "vandalism".
- The policy page should not be unnecessarily long.
- Some policies may not apply for all pages (e.g., user pages and talk pages).
Once you have the page created, set up a link in the sidebar and ideally also on pages such as the main page or community portal, so people will find the policies easily.
Community portal
Project:Community portal is your ultimate reference for editors and readers. Since not everybody wants to join or follow a wiki's social media, it can be hard to communicate ideas with all readers and editors; this is where a community portal comes in place.
While a community portal might seem odd to add on paper, it's a great reference to have. They may state the wiki.gg staff, local admins on the wiki, and any active translators editing the wiki, as well as offering other functionality. The only thing to remember is that you should keep your community portal easy to understand.
After creating the community portal page, you may want to consider adding the community portal link to the sidebar (** portal-url|portal
).
About page
Project:About is an optional page that, if created, informs users about your wiki in more detail. It can contain the wiki's mission, current stats, history, or list its current admins. It can be linked in the footer by editing MediaWiki:Aboutsite , which defines the link's text (e.g., About {{SITENAME}}
).
